306 speedo/dash

Post by wal750 »

I have a 1994 306 xtdt
My speedo is broken. I have sourced a new instrument panel with new speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge and temp indicator. The only problem is that it is from a petrol motor and mine is diesel.
My question is will the rev counter read the same as the derv one. Obviously the petrol one will rev higher but will car indicate it's doing 5000rpm when in reality doing 3000rpm on the petrol dial or will it read correctly. It's all to do with the calibration I suppose and if there is a linear scale. Also different gearbox issues.
I pose this question because I can't reaaly use my old rev counter as it has an orange needle and the new one has a white needle. Bit of a dilemma because I'll have different needles.
Could I possibly swap the needles from the rev counters?
Hoping somebody can help me who has done this before. Many thanks.

Remember, Yours being a 1994 car, you have the cable driven speedo!
Peugeot changed over to an electronic driven speedo on the 306 in mid 1996.

I think the rev counter should be ok.I once had a Capri 2.0 that the previous owner had put a V6 into.It still had the 4 cyl dash clocks,so the 4 cyl rev counter under read,by about 2k rpm.As the diesel & petrol are both 4 cyl engines,it should read correct.
Unless antone knows different...
