can't find gearbox oil filler Peugeot 306 diesel

Unread post by MARKBLACK »

Hi,
today I fitted a cv boot (outer) but somehow the shaft came out from the gearbox so I lost a bit of oil. I need to check the level but can't find the filler cap, can anybody help its a 1993 1905cc diesel peugeot 306.

No filler "cap" per se, but a filler / level hole. it's a bit of a swine to get to, and to gain access you will probablly need to remove the N/S wheelarch liner. The bolt is the only 19mm head one on the pressed steel end of the gearbox. remove it, and squeeze oil in until it starts to drain back out again. If I'm filling a gearbox up from dry, I use a funnel and a length of hose, clipping the funnel to a coil of the suspension spring, so that I can keep the funnel topped up with oil. Fiddly job. Have fun!

In addition to the previous post - you'll probably need to remove the n/s wheel for ease of access. Keep the car as level as possible, otherwise you'll get an incorrect level.

My 205 has a BE3 Gearbox like that but my filler goes right on the top of the gearbox near the clutch arm, and uses a 16mm hex headed screw to fill it.

Having had three BE3's and a BE1 box, I've never had a filler in that position. And what would be the point? It wouldn't check the level.

The early BE gearboxes had a filler plug on the "front" face of the casting (the other side from the differential) and, as you say, it was rather pointless, as the only way to "check" the oil level was to drain it, and then measure in the required 2 litres. The Talbot Horizon 1.9XUD that I ran years ago had this arrangement. No surprise that it was changed.

So there is a correct level of oil for gearboxes? ooops, used to just put loads of oil in mine, maybe why it leaked all the time!
Is the level thing on top of the differential round the back of the box then?

The level plug will be on the end of the gearbox.
Have a look at the picture Beezer posted above.
With the car sitting level, Remove the filler bolt & you should get a small drop of oil flowing out if alls ok.
There should be 2 litres ONLY of the correct gearoil in the box!
