Was that a question? Does your car need a (clutch?) thrust bearing or a gearbox?
Please explain more clearly what you are asking [:)]

The thrust bearing is also known as the release bearing.
This is the bearing which allows the clutch to operate, is normally mounted on the release fork, and is one of the three normal components replaced when a clutch is changed. When the vehicle is in gear, and you are accelerating this component is not in use. Unless you ride the clutch. It will normally be in operation only when the clutch pedal is depressed.
Now, the component you might be referring to, can also be found generally in the gearbox of many cars. This will take out the end float on a gearshaft, but it is called a thrust washer.
I agree uhn113x, the post from marc24935 needs to be more specific, and clear.[:D]

The problem with the car is when accelerating it sounds very rough + rattly and when stationary not in gear (neutral) you move the gearstick to the right it makes a constant whining sound.
My dad reckons its the gearbox which needs replacing as somebody said it was a common problem with saxo's as people go to quickly through the gears to quickly especially 1st + 2nd
Any ideas whether i need a new gearbox + how much will it cost or what else it could be.
Help would be appreciated

OK, Marc(?) the fog is lifting a bit.
The roughness and rattle - that does not sound like the gearbox at all. Does the engine sound OK when you are stationary and rev it? Do you only get the noise when you accelerate? At any particular speed(s)?
Most cars will make a noise if you lean on the gear lever, especially if the linkage needs adjusting. This is just the selector fork rubbing on the hub that it moves - not a reason to replace the gearbox. Do all gears engage OK?
Has it been boyracered by a previous owner?
It is easier to see when you are asking a question if you stick a '?' at the end of it! Don't forget - we can neither hear the inflection in your voice or see your face (I am smiling [:)])
