lost all lights

Post by redalan1971 »

i have lost all lights on my 1996 xantia 1.9td.
None of the headlights work or sidelights front or back.
The brake lights work and the headlights flash if the alarm is activated. no dashboard lights work either.
The keypad immobilisor also seems to be dead but the car starts without no code being entered.
Are the problems linked and does anyone have any idea as to the cause all fuses appear to okay.

Have you had any problems previously?
Do all other electrical circuits work correctly?
I am thinking aloud here so bear with me........
The bypassed immobiliser puzzles me because there has to be a constant supply to the shut off solenoid unless the immobiliser control unit has failed as a result of some other trauma possibly related to the lights failure.
Could this be a failed light switch on the steering column?
A failed lighting relay, loose, damaged possibly?
However I don't think the sidelights and dash lights go through a relay - or do they?
Come on someone help us out here!

no previous problems with the electrics, all was working fine including the immobilisor until yesterday and now no lights or immobilisor but the car does run as normal. wierd i will have to try and trace the feed to the switch when its light.

'96 Xantia does not have relays in the lightings circuit other tha the alarm flasher and any dim-dip relay. I suspect a problem in the feed to the lights switch.

i have tested the fuse baord today and fuses 4,18,19 have no power to them is there a common feed for each of these and where should it come from (poss a faulty relay or broken wire) fuse board is hard to get behind to trace the wire.

Have you checked the fusebox in the engine compartment? The one marked in red controls the lighting switch, immobiliser and rear fog lamp relay.

Just looked in a 1.9td VSX and the box is next to the battery. Black fuse 60 amp.

yes i have checked them and there is power at all of them but the one you highlighted is where i am going to start my tracing as it feeds all the circuits that have no power on the internal fuse box.
you dont know by any chance if it feeds a relay that may have packed up the haynes manual doesn't say what relays are what.

Best that you check the voltage you're getting across the battery when the alternatpors charging - and also that it still charges when you load the output heavily, since it could have blown one or two rectifier diodes and still give a reasonable output voltage.
