Starting Problems

Unread post by alan81 »

Hi,
I have a PUG 205 K-Reg Style which uses unleaded petrol.
It runs great except sometimes, if I haven't used it for a day or longer it has trouble starting.
Same start procedure followed everytime. Choke pulled fully out and clutch down.
It turns over ok but just doesn't start. If I wait and then aswell as having the choke out, depress the accelerator down abit, it tends to try harder and make some more noises. This is the point at which it will eventually start or make me get the bus. It is worse after inactivity plus cold damp weather I should add. When it does start it sort of judders whilst driving along and is more prone to cut out until after 10 mins or so.
Does anyone know what it could be? I'm a novice when it comes to cars and don't know the engine all that well.
Cheers,
Al

Its good that your are pulling the choke out. Try pumping the acclerator pedal few times to add some neat fuel into the carb. This should help a bit. Its worth making sure the plugs and distributor are working ok and there is a decent spark getting to the plugs. One thing to try when you have more time is to take one of the spark plugs out, attach it to the plug lead and hold it close to an earth point of the car - engine block, body work. HOLD IT WITH PLIERS AND EVEN RUBBER GLOVES as if you get electrocuted from it it bloody hurts!!! Get a friend to turn the car over and you should see a nice spark. If you dont then spray some Wd40 in the dizzy cap and onto the ends of each dizzy lead. It may just be a bit of moisture stopping a good connection. Next thing to do would be to get a service done on the car and do the valves and replace the plug leads and dizzy rotar and cap. Im not sure but you might have points on your car too which may need adjusting. Its all worth doing to help get the car working better.

if the engine is the 1.1 TU series it might be the choke control unit that is screwed to the top of the carb, its a small black vacuum unit.when you pull the choke out all the way it stops the engine being choked when starting, when the engine starts it opens the choke flap slightly to allow more air in and less fuel.
Try pulling the choke out 3/4 or even 1/2 way and see how the car starts[:)]

Thanks guys, I'll give these ideas a shot next time it happens. It's getting serviced on 15th Dec so I'll ask them to change the spark plugs too.
Cheers,
