106 Diesel Starting Probs

Post by dave_b »

106 Zest2 1.5D, 2001 Reg, 50000 miles.
Car has become dificult to start on a morning. On a normal morning
will take two/three turns before it catches (used to start on first
turn when new) and if it's frosty (like this morning!) won't start
with out a shot of Easy Start up the air filter. Car runs perfectly
otherwise. I have never had a diesel before so am a bit lost when it
comes to fault finding but I am begining to suspect the glowplugs -
would anybody like to confirm/deny my suspicions.
Cheers, Dave

Glow plugs would be my first port of call. Easy start is not good for your engine so go easy. WD40 instead of easy start is what some of the truck mechanics recommend. Go for Beru plugs. GSF can supply.

My friends 2000 106 has got the same probs. The glowplugs look nice & easy to change though with clear access, should be about a 10 min job. When starting it again, let the glow light go out, switch off & turn ignition again, letting the g/plugs come on twice. Then start it.See if that starts better then.If so,its proberly your g/plugs.Beru are the plugs to go for.

Changed glowplugs - all fixed![:)]
The new plugs measured about 0.85 Ohms, the old ones measured 0.5,16.5,47.5 and open circuit(!) No wonder I was having starting problems!!
