Citroen TD Transplant

Post by Dave40 »

Wasn't quite sure where to post this one, but here goes.
The Mrs has a Suzuki Vitara which she finds is the perfect vehicle for her 2 mile main road round trip to Tescos. If the tarmac should ever disolve into a torrent of mud she'll definately get the cornflakes home!
But seriously I'm quietly impressed with the little 4x4. It's very reliable and does everything my mates Landrover does (except spend half it's life being repaired). The only thing I don't like is it has a thirst like the late Oliver Reed, which leads me to my current thought.
My ZX TD has a great engine which gives a good balance of performance and economy so the Citroen TD motor in the Vitara may be a good combination whilst giving about 20bhp extra.
That's the easy bit, now for practicalities:
Citroen TD max rpm 4750 v Suzuki 6500.
Diesel v petrol
FWD v RWD/4X4
etc.
Any thoughts from you all on thie subject?

If i'm not mistaken, Vitara's TD engine is PSA's 1.9TD.
But you sure would have a lot of mods to do, beginning with the gearbox...
Regarding the fuel economy, have you changed fuel filters? My sister's Corsa used to be very thirsty, but with a new filter it passed.
Still think this topic should be on general chat...
Cheers!

I would start trying to find out relative gear ratios for the Suzuki petrol and diesels - they may be the same as people don't expect diesels to have very high top speeds. If they are different it could well be the final drive units that are different.
before embarking on a project such as this its worth while looking at the prices of factory made ones - and I guess its not worth the trouble of converting.
Some net searching may take you into the realms of the 4X4 enthusiasts who may do this job every week! There may be specialists who make the conversion parts necessary like engine mounts, gearbox fitting adaptors etc.
When I did a landRover many years ago (BMC 2.2 diesel)I was able to but a cast aluminium adaptor and some excellent engine mounts as well as instructions on how to modify the clutch cylinder mount etc. Some of it was correct - some not!
As a comment the grief involved was huge and I must have had the engine in and out about 5 times in all!

Apparently the Toro Groundsmaster uses an 38HP version of the XUD9, the service manual explains in detail how to overhaul the engine, and has a section on cleaning and setting up injectors etc.
The Toro Groundsmaster is a grasscutter.

Im sure I saw mention of a guy with a suzuki vitara with a hdi engine in....it was on the upsolute website, 110 version, chipped.
Ahh, just had a look on suzuki's website - 1997cc, so might be the hdi engine...

I'd say trade in the Susi Vitae for a TD variant - and surprise, surprise, it's the ZX TD down there ...
That's how easy it transplants [8D]
