Piston play

I have just took the cylinder head off my peugeot 306td, it has 100k on the clock, I tryed to move the piston from side to side and there is a bit play,is there there supposed to be play, the bores are quite smooth with very little ridge at the top,just dont know how much play there is supposed to be?

There will be some movement as the piston rings are flexible. It is lost motion that should concern you. Crank turns but pistons don't immediately move with it. Play in the bearings etc. What kind of problems led to you removing the head?
