Where's the turbo gone??

Post by tonyb1 »

Hi to all, I've got a bit of a problem following a glow plug change. After I picked it up from the garage after having four new plugs fitted, I've noticed that when going up hill, even a slight climb with pedal to the floor I can't get it past 70mph. In 4th gear, pedal to the floor, it won't go past 40mph if I'm going up hill. Prior to the plug change it used to leave other cars behind. It seems to have lost it's power. The quiet turbo whiste is still there, it's just sluggish. Does anybody know what's happened? I'm at a loss on this one. Cheers.

Sounds like some clumsy clot has pulled a pipe off somewhere, examine pipes in the fuel pump area looking for splits etc.

If you lose a big turbo pipe it's very noisy! So my guess is they've disconnected the small hose that connects onto the top of the injection pump, and tells the pump how much boost there is. About 1" dia and comes off the big trunking somewhere.

check the seal between the inlet manfold and the intercooler - this often grows and need renewing when the intercooler is removed to change the plugs.
If the intercooler is replaced without renewing this seal, a boost leak can occur.

Xantia TDs don't have this type of seal as such, the intercooler is mounted down in front of the radiator rather than on top of the engine.

have a look to make sure that the throttle cable has not been disturbed, i.e you are still getting full throttle.

The big turbo pipe was hanging off. The other pipes were a bit on the loose side as well. I had moan at the garage who put it down too a 'busy day'. Now running as sweet as a nut. Thanks guys.

Would you like to tell us which garage this was, so that if we live in the area then we can avail ourselves of a bargepole...
Cheers

I trust that you are billing them for your time at the same rate that they billed you.
After all, they were too busy to do a proper job.

This same thing happened to me. It really annoys me because it wastes so much time and when you turn up with a complaint I find most garages look at you like you're an ideot and don't want to believe you..[V]

Vote with your feet and find another local garage.
I've had two second hand Xantias now both maintained by citroen dealers and independant specialists. When I've worked on the I've found things broken, things not put together properly and bits missing. I try to put right what has been "done" to the cars, but its not always possible.
After I've owned a car for a while it tends to be in better shape than when I bought it, I'm not a profesional mechanic and I don't bodge, temporary fixes get permanantly fixed.

Theres not a lot of skill around these days is there.
What did these "mechanics" charge for fitting the glow plugs?

I would check to make sure they change your no.1 plug (nearest the injection pump). If they were having a 'busy day' then they might have skipped it.
I had a garage do this when I 1st got my Xantia and had them change the plugs. When I did them the next time myself I found the no1 was Beru and the other threee were NGK, a sure sign of a slack job!

My Xantia had a full Citroen dealer service history when I first bought it - no. 1 glowplug was obviously much older than the other 3
