Enines in a ZX

This whole head gaskit thing got me thinking (always a bad move!)
Out of the french range: Peugeot, Renault & Citroen (plus others) which will drop into a ZX?
I'd like to keep in the lower tax bracket (rules out 1.6, 1.8,1.9TD etc) but would like a does of performance. I'm happy with the 1.4i but if it has head probs then fancy a change.
One mad idea was to put a R5 GT Turbo unit in.
What are my options?

Pretty sure you can rule out the Renault range engines, as these are a completely different taste. Only by sheer coincedence these engines would match mountings, gearboxes, driveaxles etc.
Peugeot & Citroen (PSA) however uses the same engine range.

oh right, ok then. Well forget the Renault range then. Any others??
