hey guys, the heater fan on my '92 ax debut has recently decided to die. The fuses are all ok, any ideas?
It happened yesterday but then suddenly started to work again for no apparent reason.., and now dead once more!
Reading through past messages there is a mention of the fan wired through the ignition, is this the case on the ax? Could anyone suggest some simple tests I can carry out to locate the fault.

Tris, don't know off hand how the fan is controlled but make sure it's not the slider or control knob switch before you start pulling the cabling apart. If you have a slider or rotary fan speed control try turning or sliding the control slowly through it's full travel. The slider, rotary contact system is not very robust on just about all the systems I have seen and these can give intermittent control. Robin

The Fan on my AX developed similar symptons in that it would work and then it wouldn't. Eventually I only had one speed and then that would work sometimes and othertimes it wouldn't. The problem I found was in the resistor to the unit. All feeds were 12v to the fan but they connected to the resistor (a coiled wire) at different points to adjust the voltage to the motor. In mine the resistor wire was broken - just too damn old to get it to reconnect again.

It's all situated in the heater fan housing. On my old AX it has two or three bolts to remove it and an electrical connector. You can either replace the whole unit or take the old one to bits to repair it.
The resistor is a length of coiled wire (encased in heat resistant material) and sits behind the external connecter. To get to it you have to separate the fan housing and chip away at the heat resistant stuff. It's likely that the resistor wire is broken and will snap again wherever you try to mend it - but you may be lucky.

I have found a suitable ax in a scrappy and have been trying remove the blower. Blimey its a pain to get out without the car being on top of another, with my legs dangling out the door! I have undone many a bolt, but the unit still wont budge. Are there some sort of fasteners at the top of the unit which I cant see? The donor car is a bit of a wreck so yanking the whole dash off is an option. Any knowledge of this operation would be welcome.

Remove any bits of placky trim from under steering wheel column then undo the 2 nuts one on each side of blower unit - undo the wiring harness (or if its scrappy version cut after the connctions into the loom). Remove ducting and hit gently with rubber mallet to dislodge.
Swear, then hit repeatedly if it wont dislodge. The AX is surprisingly easy to work on (keep telling yourself this) as the dash does not need to be removed.
