Groaning brakes!?! (Xantia estate.)

Why should the front brakes of my Xantia groan and grind and generally sound as if the pads have worn right-down, when on inspection they are, in fact, less than half worn??

Grinding noise is not good have you checked all 4 pads?

I'm in the process of replacing the front pads. Got one side done okay but broke the retaining clip in the pin on the other side and will need to get a small drill bit to drill it out. But I swear all four pads are at worst only half worn!! There, also, has been no warning light! Could the noise be a characteristic of the brand of pad? These are Lucas.

when you replaced them, did you take the sharp 90deg angle off the pad?, as this can sometimes cause the pads to squeal for no reason.
