Black Smoke?

I have a 50K diesel 306 which yesterday was belching black smoke & over revving when no pressure on accelerator, also stange noise from engine at 50mph. Limped home and car still strats but is this a major problem?

Is it a turbo? Black smoke is usually oxygen starvation. Strange noise should be investigated. Have you had a timing belt change? Sorry for the questions!
