309 Handbrake

Post by burns »

I just remembered the other niggle I have with my car...
When I put the handbrake on it takes about 10 clicks before it comes on fully. This seems like quite a lot as by this point I practicaly pulling backwards not up. It's also very hard to lock the rear wheels if I need too;). This says handbrake adjuster too me, but the haynes manual mentions not making it to tight as it has an auto adjuster. Has anyone got any ideas how tight I should have it and how this auto adjuster affects it? Some times it'll come on really soon, about 5 clicks, but not often.
Cheers.

Do a search on this - there's loads about adjusting rear drums on the Citroen forum.
Don't adust your handbrake via the cable, take the drums off and using the adjuster, bring the shoes closer to the drum so they slightly rub when the drum's back on. It's a matter of trial and error.
Be gentle when taking the drum off the stub axle, the wheel bearings can come apart - not good.
