xantia cam belt

Post by daveandrews »

I have a 1.8 16v xantia. Cam belt snapped yesterday during a short drive, after getting the car ready for MOT! Does anyone know if the engine is likely to be damaged following this disaster, or is there any quick way of finding out if the engine is damaged? Help!!! [?][:(][:(!][:0]

According to my computer bumf the engine is likely to have been damaged. Exposing the camshafts should tell you. I would turn engine so pistons are all away from head and turn each cam sprocket. Bent valves would be obvious.

Yep as Beezer says...
This is classed as an interference engine so there will be a better than 75% chance of damage. Easy way to check is to get the covers off and look for stuck down valves. If it looks OK then time and fit a new belt then do a compression test.
