Problems
1 Fan only works with engine running
2 Sometimes the fan speed cannot be adjusted,the slider moves but the fan speed does not change(have to switch off engine then restart ,after this the speed can be adjusted)
3 After moving the slider the fan speed changes with a short pause
4 I removed the fan and measured the voltage on the thick red and black wires(12v)but on the red and black wires going into the fan only 5v.If I closed the relay 12v went to the fan and it worked at full speed but when I released the relay the voltage went back to 5v and no fan speed(with ignition on but no enguine running).
Is it electronic rather than mechanical [?]
There is a electronic/heatsink controller? on the fan I am suspecting this as my problem ,any ideas[?]

If you have aircon the speed controller is built into the fan. It sounds like this is your car. The models without aircon used a resistor pack.
Fan only works with engine running = normal.
Fan speed changes with a short pause = normal.
A fan that is slow to start can be due to build up of crap in the motor and if cleaned restored to like new operation:
Pull plug with red & black wires from side of fan motor.
Push 3 rubber lugs in and pull motor free from housing.
Release clips holding brushes in and remove spring / brush.
Blow out crap with compressed air - wear a mask (I didn't and was coughing for a week[xx(]).
Lubricate with WD40 and reassemble
