ZX Rear Brake Valves

Greetings all,
I have a 1.9 J Reg ZX Volcane. Can anyone tell me what the units on the rear brake pipes are ?
There is one on each of the rear brake pipes, they are about 4 inches long hexagonal cylinder units. They apear to be some kind of valve.
They are located on the pipes under the rear just in front of the spare wheel.
Any information on what they are or what they do is apreciated.

Pressure limiting valves to prevent the rear wheels locking up during heavy braking.
