smoky diesel while engine pulling

my rover 218 td seems to be smoking a lot when engine at lowish revs.., when pulling away , 1st , 2nd and mainly 3rd gear...only really noticed it at night when headlights behind me ...any thoughts

Always looks its worst when you floor it with headlights behind you.

If the performance is ok,& it doesn`t need constant topping up of oil,i wouldn`t worry to much.Mine is the same,upto about 3500 rpm,then it clears.I followed a brand new Merc E320 diesel the other day in day light.You should have seen the black smoke coming out of that!
