OK...here is a plan.

I have drained it.

1st refill before anything else.
2nd drain when hot, at this time remove sump/clean filter etc and then 2nd refill
Drain when hot, 3rd refill

thinking on this is get some clean ATF into it to assist in cleaning out.....if I clean the filter now I will/could block the filter with crap again and will need to repeat the filter wash/sump off.

Nope, just patience... It's a small hole you're going into. It helps if the oil is warm and thus a bit less thick...
