Re: Davie's Activa Clutch
Excellent work today
The driveshaft was never going to release easily from the hub despite a bit of judicious heat from the oxy set so I removed the shaft with hub attached! Success and nothing sheared, not even the delicate little ABS sensor bolt

I also released the slave cylinder from the gearbox and confirmed definitely that the release bearing has pulled out of the diaphragm. I's clear to see where the pushrod has massively over-reached but luckily no fluid leakage so a gentle push back should see it all good again.. Dangerously near splitting the gearbox from the engine now...

Perfect weather for it too. Spring really is here
This is my lot for today as I have gardening work to do for a friend now...
Hopefully more progress tomorrow...

Re: Davie's Activa Clutch
Good work Jim. So if that gaitor ever splits then it's one of the glue it together ones then without ever having to think about it, and if the cv joint goes then get a hub along with the shaft lol

Re: Davie's Activa Clutch
Maybe if the hydraulic puller ever turns up Davie that'll do the job. Currently it's 'delayed' with UKMail parcels. They've had it for three days now but don't say why it's delayed..... They seem a bit shonky to me.
But yes, if a gaiter or a wheel bearing goes then a new hub and shaft may be the only answer.
But then again, if needs must there are other ways of extracting it such as dismantling the CV joint and then putting it in my hydraulic press. That will do the job for sure...
To be honest, I'd love to know the reason why they are both so tight....

Re: Davie's Activa Clutch
Well if you want to find out just to satisfy your curiosity go for it. If it takes longer to get the car back I don't mind. Your puller is the same as my discs then. Ordered at the same time, pads delivered, discs lost. And while I am on loan mode I have not had a refund from Mr auto for the first clutch. They shall be phoned on Monday.

Oh dear, we're both seeing some shonky service
No, I shall not try too hard with that shaft as I don't want to damage anything...

Re: Davie's Activa Clutch
Give it a try with the new puller, it will get a good test. But as it doesn't really need separating well at least I will know the hub won't fall off [emoji12]

Re: Davie's Activa Clutch
More good work done today... It is with deep joy I discover that there is no need to remove the OS driveshaft
After disconnecting the track rod end the hub will pull sufficiently clear to release the driveshaft from the gearbox.
So basically, the hydraulic hub puller that I still haven't received is no longer an essential requirement to get the job done.
I also got the gearbox mount loosened ready to be removed and loosened the one very awkward bellhousuing bolt.. That's all the prep. work done now before the gearbox spilt and clutch replacement proper... Before I do that I'll pop the new handbrake cables on whilst access is so good...
I made a small modification to the gearbox mount to make the rebuild easier. One of the bolts that fix the mount casting tot he gearbox proper is obscured by a big washer on the base of the rubber mount shaft. It's hard to get a decent purchase on this bolt as a result but after loosening it and then removing the casting I ground a small cutout into the washer to enable a socket to just clear it.
I also determined, by the intact blue paint on the mounts, that this is the first time this job has been done..

Re: Davie's Activa Clutch
Which is both good and bad news. Good news, as (barring the factory mechanics) nobody has done anything to it (such as buggering it up), and bad news as this also means that things have had time to get a really tight hold (and seize in place).CitroJim wrote:I also determined, by the intact blue paint on the mounts, that this is the first time this job has been done..

Re: Davie's Activa Clutch
That's one good thing about Davie's Activa. It's very largely a completely bodge-free zone James. Looks like whatever work has been done in the past has generally been done properly and that's both good and unusual!!!
I've so far not had any issues with seized stuff but on many components I've had to exercise great caution to ensure tight stuff didn't shear off, especially things like the ABS studs and mudshield bolts that are made of cheese! So far, all have played the game with gentle persuasion
Stuff properly tightened at the time of manufacture rarely causes any issues... It's those things tightened up by garage apes long after the car was made and for those who have no knowledge of correct torque settings and only know one - FT - that invariably causes problems

Re: Davie's Activa Clutch
FT has two meanings, depending on who uses it. FT by a trained mechanic is "Fully Torqued". FT by a bodge mechanic is "F**king Tight". It looks like you have the former instance to deal with (which is good news then).

James, your definition of FT is spot-on! Sadly we see the latter all to often...
