Instead of 10 points I'll leave you with 10 Os from them and celebrate with the remainder!!

I recognised the ROM/RAM layout from when I investigated upgrading the RAM on my BBC running the BBC's educational software which I forget the name of, it was supplied on two 16" laser disks IIRC, and we had some great fun with it! :-D

EDIT, just looked it up, it was The Domesday System :-D

That really was a software project ahead of it's time in so many ways. The fact that they managed to do so much running on the hardware of the day was quite something.

Laser discs really must get a mention just for - despite their limitations - being one of the most *satisfying* and futuristic looking physic media types.

One day I will need to actually get something which can play that. For now it just lives on the shelves with the LPs to confuse visitors who are looking at them!

Agreed! It's one of those things far enough down the wishlist I'm not actively searching for. One will turn up one day randomly I'm sure.

I've managed to lose a lot of time this.last couple of days as I've got a new toy. Something I've wanted since the dawn of time was a spectrometer to capture proper spectral distribution graphs for light sources. Problem is simple: They're expensive. Probably the most obvious target for the sort of things I'd be using it for would be something like an Ocean Optics USB2000 which has been around since well before Windows XP. Despite being an old product though they do everything you're likely to need...unfortunately the prices for used units from reputable sources rarely dip below £500. Which is frankly too much for a bit of kit for an occasional hobby. Occasionally I've seen a few around £300...but usually sketchy looking eBay listings which just don't instill confidence, and that's too expensive to roll the dice like that on.

However a little kit has been put together by a gent over in China which they've been selling through AliExpress for around £70. This is based around a modified USB webcam and uses some open source software, all of which does what it says on the tin. The single biggest issue is that there's no proper way to calibrate the gain to ensure it's linear across the spectral range. Out the box it's a little lumpy in a few areas, though it feels like that's something it's only a matter of time until there's a solution to. I'm not talking about lab-grade results here, but just being able to point it at a blackbody radiator and being able to trim out any obvious kinks in the response curve doesn't seem like it would be unreasonably difficult. For 99.99999% of hobbyists though this will do absolutely everything they're ever going to want it to.

With a bit of time putting together a template, I've got some pretty presentable looking output.

The wavelength side of things is actually pretty accurate - and is trimmed using the 546 and 436nm mercury lines which sets both of those points and the linearity of the X axis on the graph, and that's the measurement for which accuracy is the most important. The absolute value on the Y axis is less important, though it would be really nice if we could improve on it a bit - the issue is far more obvious on something like an LED source.

That peak in the yellow (Yttrium aluminum garnet) should have a pretty smooth rise and fall, that "shoulder" on the slope shouldn't be there...If only this linearity was as easy to fix as such problems in 50 year old TVs...

I do keep half pondering if I should buy a "proper" unit one day though. Between the tat I've got here and a friend down in London who has a way more extensive collection than me, we could build up quite a library of data then which until now has only really existed in fuzzy scans of mouldy old datasheets...Not that having a proper spectral plot for a fluorescent tube with the zinc beryllium silicate phosphors which were basically extinct by the latter part of the 1940s is likely to be important to many people!

One of the big limitations of the spectrometer I've been playing around with was some significant non-linearity of the response curve. I really don't count this as a criticism of the instrument. We're talking something with a £60 price tag intended for hobbyists who are interested to take a peek at things rather than a £5000+ lab instrument. They're very, very different things and I wasn't really expecting miracles here.

I wanted to see if I could improve on this a bit though. Here's a plot from a very ordinary incandescent light bulb - so essentially a 2700K blackbody radiator. It should be a nearly straight line from 300nm up to a maximum at around 800nm (actually does continue to climb beyond there, but I'm dealing with the visible range only). Our plot however...well it's rather...wiggly.

I decided that I was going to see if I could do something to improve on this. Given that thanks to it being something easily physically modelled, getting hold of a data file showing the response curve expected for a blackbody radiator was pretty easy.

With a bit of patience and moderate amounts of swearing at Excel I managed to do some extrapolation and create a per nanometre gain compensation ratio. Nothing here was really all that complicated, just bashing the two datasets into playing nicely with each other required a bit of patience. I did consider trying to come up with a way to automate the process but quickly realised that was probably going to end up taking longer than just spending a couple of hours of coffee fuelled number wrangling to get it done manually.

I've chosen an Atlas Kolor-rite lamp as my victim, sorry test subject for the first test of this as they've got a really distinctive looking spectrum. Should look like this - a pretty poor quality scan from a catalogue, but you get the idea.

It's not perfect, no. However it's a whole lot closer to the shape that trace should be than it started out. Obviously goes without saying that I've done nothing to make that pretty either - it's literally just a screen grab from Excel!

Further experimentation needed. Feels like progress though.

Having dropped this output into some analysis software shows pretty much what I expected, that we have too much gain at the red end.

We know this lamp should have a colour temperature of 4000K and colour rendering index of 92. It's showing as too warm at 2972K and a higher than correct CRI value. So we definitely need to do a bit further tweaking, but we're definitely heading in the right direction. At the end of the day I'm not expecting to ever get these values spot on given the obvious limitations of the kit we're using but I reckon we *should* be able to get in the right ballpark.

In truly world shaking news, I actually did something car related today. Was even successful at 50% of the items attempted.

Was intended to be oil, oil filter, fuel filter and air filter changes on the Volvo. Which it's been nagging me about for an embarrassingly long number of weeks now.

First try of the new vacuum oil drainer.

First impressions, far prefer it to the Pela it's replaced. Being tall but narrow.it actually takes up less room in the garage in terms of footprint, and having the pump integrated means you can operate it easily one handed - that would just result in the pump pulling off the top of the Pela. Also seems to be *way* faster - though admittedly 0W30 oil isn't exactly the thickest. Far easier to judge how much came out as well which takes some of the guesswork out of refilling. My Pela has always had issues with air leaks as well which meant you had to pump it a LOT when draining anything with a larger sump than the Invacar. I know it doesn't really mean anything, but this *feels* less flimsy too. 6.5 litre capacity means I can juuuuust manage a change on the Volvo without having to empty it mid way through as well which is nice. The Pela was officially 5, but I found unless you were continually pumping it the usable capacity was somewhere between 3-4 litres.

Have to confess this is the first time I've actually pulled the cover off the Volvo's engine.

Still makes my brain do a slight double take seeing odd numbers of things like injectors on an engine in a passenger car. It alarms me quite how many things I'm looking at in here and realising that I have absolutely no idea of the purpose of. A hell of a lot going on, but even under the cover it's a pretty tidy setup by modern standards at least compared to some others I've seen. Hello VW, yes I'm looking at you.

Speaking of the cover, there have clearly been mice in here at some point.

This appears to be significantly historic though as none of the bits of shredded acoustic foam are present around the engine bay, and I can't see anything else that's been nibbled thankfully.

My progress however was halted by this fluffing thing.

This is the cap concealing the replaceable element oil filter. Which is absolutely biblically tight. This is the third car I've had to deal with one of these on, and it's the third one I've had this fight with. On the Caddy I ended up having to get a breaker bar on it, the one on the Partner did eventually let go when I had all my weight hanging off it (which resulted in me just about knocking myself out on the battery when it let go and cutting my hand to ribbons on the radiator). This one I'm seriously worried that I'm going to shatter the thing - I can both feel and see the whole thing flexing. Will need to see if I can get a strap wrench around it *and* the socket on the top to try to turn the whole thing at once. I may see if I can get a spare cap from Volvo first just as insurance in case it does disintegrate.

I am seriously developing a real hatred for this style of oil filter.

Much as it pained me I admitted defeat and it got refilled with fresh oil with the old filter still in, and I'll come back to this next week - due to work going on at the moment I don't have a space on the drive to work in till Monday so it won't be until then at the earliest. I was out of time and energy by the time I waved the white flag on that so the rest of the filters will also need to wait.

Do seem to have found the source of my small oil leak.

Looks to be weeping out from under the rocker cover in the vicinity of that actuator (no idea what for!). Which given that the rocker cover also seems to BE the intake manifold, looks like it will be all manner of fun to rectify. Aren't modern cars fun? Realistically that's just being filed under "monitor" for now. I will most likely chuck that at a garage to sort if it becomes an issue as this is just too modern for me to really be comfortable beyond basic servicing, especially anything that involves dismantling bits of common rail injection systems. Nope, that sounds like a job for someone else.

Hopefully I can at least change the sodding oil filter without needing to call in reinforcements though...that would be nice in the whole "not feeling completely useless" department.

I really must get one of those vacuum oil drainers Zel. I like that one you have...

Ahh yes, those filters - so often biblically tight and a fight... I use a torque wrench on them when doing them up as it seems they're easy to over-tighten otherwise...

Good luck in freeing it off :) I'll have empathy as I have the same job to do soon on mine...

I've had mostly great results with the vacuum drainers, but I did have a near miss with one of the fleet once where the suction tube got stuck in the dipstick tube. It felt like it was properly caught on a sharp bit of metal in the bowels of the engine - nearly ended up as a sump off job to remove it but it eventually freed off.
I could also do with a source of replacement rubber/plastic connector ferrules - the ones that connect the different sections of tubes and also the tube to container connector as some of mine are showing their age. You can buy a complete set of replacement tubes and ferrules, but it's cheaper to buy a complete new vacuum drainer including all the pipes off ebay rather than just buy the pipes and ferrules on their own #-o
