The programmable tailgate is fab for watching horse trials and Point-2-Point etc (sitting in the back, suspension on High) as it gives you a roof when it rains and gets on the tits of all the Audi and Range Rover drivers in their silly expensive green designer "gummy boots" :)

Reminds me of a point to point I went to down South many years ago with a group of mates (one whose girlfriend was competing) - we parked in the 'commoners' car park as we were only there as we had nothing better to do. The snobbery was unparalleled - seeing all the headscarf brigade with their designer picnic baskets complete with champagne flutes and the like. A crusty announcement came over the tannoy system an hour or so later..."would the owner of a green Ford Escort in the £5 car park, please contact one of the stewards - you are causing an obstruction, thanks awfully.'

That's really a Non-starter.

Completely different tailgate for a start, wiring, struts, sensors and a hundred other parts. Would be cost prohibitive.

I'm... going to be brave here. I will do the electric tailgate retrofit on my friend 2008 tourer.

Marc, would you be kind and post up a wiring schematic from the tailgate ecu to the bsi?
I know the wiring goes on the left side of the trunk and theres two connector (that goes to the tailgate) above the v6 battery. (also a big harness besides the 2 connectors)

I have a whole rear electric tailgate on hand 8-)

Unfortunately the wiring is by build date and options - so having checked already, you won't have the correct wiring looms to start with on a 2008 tourer compared to when the motorised versions came in - the looms are completely different.

I have a 2012 tourer and I have the e-tailgate parts and wires sitting on my shelf. I got them when I got rear ended and the parts car replacement tailgate was electric. Is there ready connectors behind the plastics where I can connect these wires? I don't have the "foot lift" sensor, but is it neccesary? I have diagbox if programming is needed.

There’s no foot lift sensor. The motorised tailgate is opened and raised via the key fob middle button for originally equipped models. It is closed using the button on the tailgate.

But the question still remains - if you didn’t have the electric tailgate as original specification, then you will have a different wiring loom - both in the tailgate and in the various looks back to the BSI.

Exactly, I hope it was worth the effort!
You'll be back in 3 days asking about the Economy mode fix as it has stopped opening / closing.... :rofl2:

10/10 for effort though :-D

It amuses me that I'd given thought to getting rid of the electric tailgate and replacing with normal old fashioned struts.

Ditto. Many's the time that I've cursed the eco kicking in and then having to struggle against the motorised struts to get them to disengage.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Mine came with this feature, i helped my friend dream come true with this.
It can open and close about 10-15 times before eco. Even after you can open and close like any normal gas strut tailgate.
And who opens theirs that many times between engine start :)

Thank you!

Next project is this stabilus electric drive for the sedan. Already have good ideas how to. :-D
