It seriously upsets the heating if the outside temperature sensor is faulty, if the display is reading about 40C as they often do when the sensor goes, the heating thinks that what it is and desperately tries to lower the temperature in the car, the fan comes on full as does the aircon, the only way you can get any heat from it is to turn it to max which overides the control unit.
