Re: Picture(s) of the day....
You've got it Bobbins. Its the biggest one I have ever seen. there were a lot of them still going when we moved down here 1n 1970, there was one on this farm but it had been replaced by a petrol driven piston pump. A friend of ours had a farm on Bodmin Moor in the '60s and he had a compound ram, driven by the river water but actually pumping spring water, it was pushing it up about 100 feet to a reservoir at the top of the farm.
If you were walking through the country you could hear/feel them from some distance, thump ....thump....thump.
The one in the picture is in a wooded area just off what was the A9 below wick, it was practically buried and very dark, I think it must have supplied a house/pub on the other side of the road.

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
It's a bit odd as I didn't think they were normally located at the point of delivery of the water - which that one seems to be ? As in - it looks like it delivers into the trough ?
We've got one here where I work, it's in it's own chamber on a small island where the stream splits. As far as I can tell, It took it's head of water from the mill lake. It used to pump over the fields to some farm houses - the field it crosses has always been known as 'ram field'.

Have a celebratory Bus trip on the 700!mickthemaverick wrote: 23 Oct 2019, 22:23 Answering all these questions has taken me over the 700 posts without a celebratory car, it just won't do!!!:
Wick to Brighton on a bus would be as challenging as Chicago to Seattle non stop on a train! ( ah but our West Sussex correspondant may well be familiar with the Southern Wick, and indeed perhaps even the 700 bus itself!)

It use to be 750 miles from here to Wick, only just over 700 now since they bridged the lochs and straightened the roads.
Bobbins
I don't think the trough has anything to do with the delivery as the pump itself is located a long distance from anywhere that water would be required, possibly for maintenance? It is housed very close to a river but in quite dense woodland just off a forest walk. We found it when we were walking the dog.

I have had cause to use the 700 Coastliner in the dim and distant past. Never had cause to use it from Wick, though I do know Wick well enough and know what it's claim to fame is : It's not Littlehampton

In the distance is Wick. No, really...... in the very far distance, just below the clouds, is Wick

Some mechanisms can't be wound back without damaging them.
The clock in the C5 is a bit like that - my oven too, will only go forwards.

It wouldn't take more than a few moments to get used to that clock. However, the clock in Patrician Vetinari's waiting room is FAR more 'evil';mickthemaverick wrote: 27 Oct 2019, 14:29 This morning I had to wind my study clock forward an hour to get the time right!! Who knows why?
