Shredders - Episode 12767 of this thrilling and epic tale..
Thinking my new brass bearings were good, I embarked on a huge shredathon, disposing of a huge pile of my dad's old paperwork I brought home when I cleared his bungalow, threw in the attic and left it until a point in the future to dispose of it all securely...
It started well and I got two huge bags of shedding before the shredder failed again. Investigation showed the brass bearing supporting the 4mm side of the axle had failed... Well-worn. So that's not going to work...
To finish the huge job, I 'borrowed' a not too badly worn nylon bearing and gear set from one of the other shredders needing bearings...
It got the job done and a veritable mountain of shreddings were generated. A job I'm so relieved is done at long last... I'm glad in a way I left it six years after dad passed away as some of the material I shredded would have been quite distressing had I done it sooner...
It did cost me... I got several paper cuts on my fingers and now they really hurt!
I'll now be looking at making the next set of test bearings out of hard nylon...

Hard lines on the replacement brass bushing failure Jim!
Is there room to accommodate a sealed ball bearing? What is the current ID and OD?

Not really Matt, due to the construction of the gearbox... One bearing is offset and has a 'D' shape to correctly locate it...MattBLancs wrote: 18 Oct 2023, 06:56 Hard lines on the replacement brass bushing failure Jim!

I'll keep at it until I crack it

Just a thought on that bush/bearing. Due to it's 'd' shape (presumably this flat stops the whole thing spinning) could you use the existing one that has the damaged bore, drill it out larger but still keeping it's outer form and press in a small needle roller?

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
You may have noticed , with relief no doubt, that I have not posted much over the last few days. That is because my laptop developed a nasty screech/whistle/squeal sound during the last couple of days on the saunter. I was confined to posting from the phone which I am not a fan of so hence only a few made it!! This morning I decided I would dig into the laptop and see if I could see what the problem was so my day's PC engineering began. First I had to set up my aux hard drives to decide which one had sufficient space to backup my laptop to. I have four separate HDDs to choose from so I worked my way through them checking what was where, meanwhile the screech was slowly growing worse!! Eventually I picked out the two HDD's I wanted to use and set the machine to copy the C: drive to each of them in turn. Overall it took two and a quarter hours but I then had two backups for use should they be needed.
Having satisfied myself that whatever happened I'd be able to restore my stuff I set about dismantling the machine. This involved removing a dozen or so screws from the bottom including 4 hidden in various places and then I was able to separate the bottom from the keyboard and thus expose the workings!! It soon became apparent that my problem had been caused by a broken fan mount. The plastic mounting peg had sheared which allowed the fan to drop onto the corner of a metal mounting bracket and the blades were skimming the metal causing the noise. When I extracted the fan it had lost about a third of its blades and there were plastic chippings all over the place.
I cleaned all the swarf away and examined the broken post with a view to repairing it but I soon decided it would be virtually impossible to get a good strong accurately positioned post and decided it was best to raid my stock to see if I had another compatible case. Lucky for me I elected not to dump my last laptop when I bought the current one as they are both built on the same chassis and casing. Thus I was able to move the rest of the innards of my newer machine into the old case and use its cooling fan. So I swapped out the motherboards, RAM and HDD and now have my old laptop case and screen with the newer motherboard and peripherals. As soon as I began testing it I remembered the reason for my upgrade, the spacebar on the older machine is very unreliable and I frequently found a long string of letters with no spaces so I have also implemented a remote keyboard which, with the aid of a strip of velcro, I am using to type this!!

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
So that was what was screeching! Depending upon the age/make/model of laptop, up may find the bay of E will provide... I found one for my old Tosh for a very competitive price when I gave mine a cup of tea once and it decided it didn't like it... Only cost a tenner or so but when it arrived I found out why - it had no caps lock or num lock LEDs
Apart from that, it's been perfect and rescued an otherwise scrap laptop...

I'm going to sell off my Lenovo laptop, it sits here unused for weeks on end so if anyone needs one and would like to make an offer before I pop it on ebay I'll add some detail later.

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
I may be interested Gibbo as I have no backup now. The detaila I need to decide are:
Screen Size
RAM, size
HDD size and type
PROCESSOR make and generation
Ports
If you can list them I'll let you know

Here's a bit of info taken from the screen this morning but I'll be setting it back to factory before it goes. The top's cleaner than it looks in the photo.

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
The plot thickens!! My cobbled together laptop lasted all of one evening, last night. I have not been able to boot it up today at all and after many hours tinkering I have bitten the bullet and given up!! I have removed the potentially useful parts and consigned it to the bin. s
So i
I am now using my emergency backup tablet to type this and go searching for a replacement laptop

Well tablets are basically laptops, do you really need a laptop or would a PC be more beneficial?
