I do remember well the AA and RAC men saluting members.

At least those displaying the badges.

Considering that Anglia was stopped at the side of the road, how long do you reckon the patrol man held that pose before hypothermia set in ?

Ahh yes, the old salute :D Loving the subject of the spoiler... Just lovely :D

Politeness and courtesy still does exist in places... The running community remains full of it :)

My Great Aunt Sylvia had a saying that related to courtesy. "Honey attracts more bees than vinegar".

I remember that, I wonder how may lost control and crashed their motorbike and sidecar doing that. Been with the AA since 1958 but they still keep putting the price up.

I haven't read every post in this fascinating thread, so forgive me if this has already appeared:

The curved plastic piece, about the size and shape of a thin paperback opened out, which was fixed to the front of the bonnet so as to divert pesky flies from hitting the windscreen. My dad had one on his A35.

I vaguely remember those also the 'wind deflectors' you could fit to your side windows.

No this is the "bug deflectors" first appearance. But dont worry about repetition....lob anything up always has a chance to reach new contributors, and encourage more participation.

Something like this......came in many different colours.....this example probably from the US as it uses "bug" as opposed to "insect" or Fly!

Very popular in Australia in times gone by because the drivers window is wound down most of the time while travelling! Well that what this bloke said about his Hillman Minx. Course he's got what I presume is that ICI product sold all over the world Vynide (yes Vynyl and Hide) covering his bench seat. Goodness knows what 47 degrees C through glass would do to the temperature of that seat.

. . . or the consistency!

As to whether bugcatchers work, if ever proof was needed, Gibbo's unlikely gem is categoric proof they don't.

And in a great many other cars Neil, standard fitment before they started to build it into the starter motor.

Before that they had 'pull' switches, similar thing but mechanically operated. I think I have one of both types in the garage still.
