Could it be something with the automatic calibration of the injectors?
I would start with a new diesel filter as it is quite easy and also should be done anyway. Make sure to follow the procedure for emptyping the filter for air etc. Maybe a clogged diesel filter is prohibiting the auto learning/programming of the injectors, making them run bad at idle and also giving trouble driving on the highway.
