Suspension fault from leaking strut?

At least I knew it would only be in mine for about an hour, by which time it would have leaked out again.

Will have to do the same tomorrow as my LDS order wasn't delivered this weekend. Not ideal but at least the product sheet says that it is synthetic with similar properties to LDS.

The pump seems to work ok but doesn't make much noise at all. After toping up with LDS I can rise the car to high position. Can't see how having a leaky strut would affect pump noise. I definitely prefer it this way as long as it's not an indication of an imminent failure. Will clean it this weekend.

I had a leaky strut and the pump was also making less noise. My theory is that the pressure in the system is lower and the pump needs less power (but more time) to push the fluid.

If I never show up on this forum again, then the theory is correct and the secret Citro group got me.

The pressure should be constant but if there is a leak the pump will just be working overtime and for far longer than it is designed for. It does not operate constantly - it is only supposed to maintain the pressure and therefore occasional use under normal operations. If it working constantly to try and maintain the pressure, then it is going to cause the motor to get hot. If the motor is already getting on age-wise, then its performance will be degraded as the brush material starts wearing and the carbon build up starts to conduct.

Left as it is, I can see the pump failing completely before long, so would suggest a clean up as has been detailed in a few posts on the Forum and to where I linked to earlier:

New strut fitted - had to drill through one of the Torx screws. Found also a cheap pump as a backup so hopefully all ok. Last repair as it is getting excessively difficult and costly to maintain these.

Nice one. It's one reason why I moved mine on and the fact I wasn't doing the mileage anymore. Mind you, mine had literally thousands £s spent on it under warranty, and with a new driver's strut recently done and on the third rack with the mod this time, new AC compressor, DMF, Clutch, Condenser, wiper motors etc., etc., they had a bargain. The chap who bought it wanted it so badly he paid a large deposit based on the pictures alone. They came all the way from London and bought it on the spot after a quick drive.

Glad she went to an enthusiast and the rest of the family that came up with him in a brand new Range Rover all wanted to ride back in the X7!

No worries Jay - It's all in the thread I started after 2 original new Citroen racks failed (the original and a new Citroen one), requiring a refurbished and treated third rack.

The modification many of us used concerns putting a rubber boot over the pinion after coating it with copious amounts of marine grade grease after it has been replaced. We hope this will afford better protection from water that tends to sit in the pinion base seal and starts corroding the pinion and surrounding area, which distorts the O-ring, and then it starts rusting internally and destroying the other seals.

It's a bit of a read as it was an ongoing saga with others chipping in with their ideas.

Thanks Marc, I'll have a look through that thread. Bobbins has kindly sent me some PAS pipework and a pinion housing for me to work with to see what solutions I can come up with for the dreaded leaking pipework, and I know somewhere I can get 3d printing done in Thermo Poly Urethene, so I was thinking on making a proper boot for it. By "proper" I mean something with a small "window" moulded into it to accomodate that squarish bos that the short stud grows out of. I'll have a look, your mod might be good enough that it's not worth overengineering a slight improvement on it.
