My C5 HDi is the early, 110hp 2.0 8 valve so has no DPF fitted and never has had. And yet this car, which should be relatively "dirty" by modern standards isn't. Even early, non-DPF Pug HDi engines seem amazingly clean, much more so VW/Audi or Mercedes. You see the odd Ford chucking it out but not often, as for BMW and Jaguar diesels, don't they have Pug engines anyway?

Anyone know just why the Pug HDi is so clag free? Or is it just down to good design?

Never thought I'd say that about a Citroen!!!!
I think this hits the nail on the head of why people get so irritated with emissions tech. you can't really see any more / less smoke with or without the tech with a modern DI engine in good shape. the ultra fine lung clogging particles are not visible to the naked eye.

My only thoughts on engine make comparison is the driver of said vehicle as said earlier. most modern 2l diesel Mercs and BMW's etc are near or over 170bhp, the six pots are getting ever closer (and some over) 250-260bhp. if you've got it, you're gonna use it! \:D/ All the modern DI's smoke a bit at high revs with high load, it's just down to the design.

Here's a couple of vids on the PSA DPFS systems:
HDI

Here's the Blue HDI system that uses the cow pee additive (Adblue) - Incidentally Halfrauds have Adblue stockpiled right next to the screen wash - so make sure you don't put that in your wash tank (unless you're already in the country)!

Except it is a Fiat design that they couldn't afford to develop and PSA took it over.
I did not know that, but they were capable of recognising a good design and making use of it (rather than smothering it, as has happened with some good designs).

Only time I've even noticed a haze from the exhaust in the mirrors was when the handbrake had stuck on and I was having to race the engine to make any progress at all and I had someone right up my ass after dark......

Pity it wasn't the old 1.7D BX.

Last pratt who got that close up her shapely little rump had the left hand side of the bumper niceley blackened. It was a white Rover with a body coloured bumper, a new company car for my then boss and I had just poured a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank.

THAT was a smoker and a half......

Fords, Citroens, Pugs, Volvos and JLR vehicles all share some Diesel engines.

As far as I am aware all the 2.7tdv6 and 3.0tdv6 engines are made in Dagenham, they also make the 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 Diesel engines. I know they export a lot of engines from there but I don't know if Citroen and Pug have their own engine plant like Volvo do.

The new 2.0 JLR diesel is called Ingenium and is a JLR product built in its own factory in the Midlands.

Not sure what BMWs could be fitted with a Pug engine, Rovers and Freelanders used to have BMW 2.0 diesels when the X Type had the 2.0 and 2.2 Ford tdci engine (camchain), so perhaps that has caused some confusion.

Unless you have other info regarding a BMW with a Pug engine which would be interesting to know.

BMW developed the 1.6 in the mini with PSA. It's the same engine PSA use but they both manufacture their own versions.

I thought all BMW diesels used Pug engines, as do many Volvo diesels.

AFAIK, the range was developed jointly between Ford, Volvo and Peugeot and BMW use them on a customer basis, as do JLR and Toyota Europe?

I could be wrong,

The 1.6d and 2.0d in Volvos were the same design Ford/PSA engines as fitted to PSA and Ford vehicles. There were some differences on the fueling system, Fords and Volvos in my experience never had the bleeding bulb fitted making them a pain to bleed as none of them have a lift pump in the tank.

You can't really call any of these engines a Pug engine they were a joint venture.

And to be honest I don't consider the Mini to be a BMW any more than I considered a Rover 75 a BMW.

I would be surprised if the engines for the Mini plant came from France, I think it is more likely they come from Dagenham.

They did for the 1.4 and 1.6 in various Mazdas and Suzukis if I remember correctly.

But technically they are Ford DLD engines.

Personally I think such sharing of resources is a good thing.

Agreed - as long as it's a good design by proper engineers and not some accountant's wet dream penny pinching disaster.
