Squeamish people may wish to look away at this point, but about 10-15 years ago I had cause to be in the old M+B Radio warehouse in Leeds in search of some very particular comms kit. This involved rummaging around and climbing all over the various stacks of electronic and mechanical finery - electronics cabinets, hi-end telescopes, transmitter sets, testing sets for heaven knows what, you name it - it was there I was very honoured to be allowed to do such a thing At one point I was instructed to use a behemoth of an old BBC transcription deck as a stepping stone. Sacrilege To be fair, it probably played as well after I'd stepped on it as before.... but you're really not supposed to use record deck platters as footholds We also had cause to crane one of the huge old studio monitor TV sets out of the way - all went well until the handles parted way with the cabinet and the set fell to the ground from a great height.

I remember forming 'stairs' out of TVs in Granada warehouses to reach the ones at the top, you still had to lift them above your head to get them out, I think TV engineers must have been pretty fit in those days.

I used to enjoy doing the same in car scrapyards and in fact, scrapyards in general...

I love scrapyards of all kinds, still...

Miss how you can no longer really do it now.... H and S has a lot to answer for

Oh yes Jim, scrapyards. We had a beauty at Bridport on the site of an old flax mill, complete with water turbine generated electricity, it was right next door to the original 'River Cottage' which is now not far from us.

It covered about 30 acres and the further away from the buildings you got the older the cars were, even pre war ones right on the riverbank, it was a beautiful spot as well, in a valley with a river flowing round it.

I did quite a number of diesel conversions in those days and I could get practically everything I needed from there, plus a lot of other very useful things. I had an arrangement with him, I let him have a rental TV free of charge and I could take more or less what I liked from the yard, except cars - I had to pay for them. I spent many happy hours there, probably nearly as many as I spent repairing TVs.

Heaviest set I've ever shifted by a long shot. Also possibly the most fiendishly over-complicated set I've ever worked on.

Didn't stop me trying to buy it off the owner probably a dozen times!

Don't have a clue what it actually weighed other than "far too much."

It's probably number three on my list of things I hated having to move. Number 1 being the pool table in our atrium - that's *never* moving again, the Hammond Organ being second at somewhere around 130kg and fantastically awkward.

I think the 28" Sony's are the heaviest I have ever lifted - with great difficulty, the 32"s I had to get help with. Probably why all my joints are shot, mind you I have only been to the chiropractor's about 3 times in the 13 years I have been retired as opposed to about once every couple of months previously.

I only ever saw one CVC1 Zel

Lovely set and very desirable! Vanishingly rare too...

One I saw was repairable in the customers' house thank goodness...

It had an open-circuit luminance delay line due to a dry joint on the coil winding...

We'd have needed a crane to move it
