It's that same old story of politicians being "sponsered" (aka taking a bung) from the motor industry. By killing engines it reduces the supply of spares pushing up the price of any that are available so that it becomes too expensive to repair an old car so buyers put themselves into debt and buy a new car.

On a similar note Citroen did the same with brand new Maserati engines, when production of the SM stopped earlier than planned they had a large number of engines left over and rather than offer them at a discounted price engines were taken up to the top floor of the factory then thrown out in order to damage them beyond repair, therefore allowing Citroen to maintain a high price for a replacement without the problem of carrying high stock levels, the law of supply and demand.

I've also read that the Maserati engines, once they'd landed from
the first floor window, were then slegdehammered just to make
damned sure they were scrap. Not Citroen's finest hour though
this may have a LOT to do with the enforced management take
over by Peugeot as a result of Government intervention in France.
See, only bad comes from politician intervention...

I forgot to mention the second phase carried out by the Sm death squads.

All the remaining bodyshells were also deliberately destroyed again by
sledgehammering them and crushing the remains. It is said this brutal
heavy handed approach by Peugeot was deliberate and symbolic to send
out a message within Citroen that its new masters were ending the days
of extravagance and indulgent styling and engineering and meant business.

It's also suggested that it was retaliation for a mini coup by the Citroen
management where the Cx was passed for production after Peugeot
managers were duped into agreeing to proceed with a more conservative
design proposal than the one actually produced; significant wheels were
already in motion and unable to be undone when the penny did drop but
then Citroen management were pretty much castrated and many good
'old guard' Citroen people walked.

The reigns have been very tight ever
since and Citroen is always the poor relation of the family.

No wonder I'm not a big fan of Peugeot and their small minded pettiness.

Hey dave man, it was indeed you that sold me my first V6, and fair do's it was as described and was a nice car, honest seller there.

And paul, yes i've had a few cars, one micra, one escrot mk6, and now a golf mk3 (for my wife), now that wife's passed her test, i am now free to sell that shed of an escort (horrid horrid car) so I can buy a cit... second hand of course!!

what you got now paul?

i will be in the market soon david, is that one ebay?

The suffereing inflicted on these poor cars in the States at least is almost over

Hopefully common sense will now prevail and the wholesale end to this despicable practice is in sight everywhere.

Perhaps then the natural balance between new car production and demand can be allowed to be found even if some makers go to the wall as a result. It's going to happen sometime sooner or later and better sooner than risk the potential wastage of a lot of taxpayers money keeping dead ducks afloat.

The sensible thing would be that the car has to fail an MOT on something worth more than the market value of the car, that way enthusiates would keep their cars and those with A to B transport in mind could move on. The cars then can not be crushed but have to have as many parts as possible recycled or sold back on.

At the moment about 50% of a car is recycled IIRC due to the extra cost of recycling the other parts of it which is a real waste. things like the oil and fluids could be burned off in a controlled way to generate heat, or filtered well enough to be used in other applications, tyres are always good for race tracks or kids playgrounds....

I have just written a big rant about this but I realised in time that I've been down the pub lunchtime, so I deleted it all before a moderator got involved....

They were discussing this on the radio and it's set to last until 300,000 new cars are sold under the scheme or Feb2010, whichever comes soonest.

Considering 80% of new cars sold are imports, I just don't get the financial excuse the Gumment have given for it.
