Get in!!!

MOT history of this vehicle

Test date 20 December 2016 Expiry date

21 December 2017

Test Result Pass Odometer reading 134,237 miles MOT test number 7182 2903 4653 Advisory notice item(s)
nearside front Anti-roll bar linkage has slight play in a ball joint (2.4.G.2)
offside rear Fluid suspension unit supply pipe corroded but not seriously weakened (2.4.D.3)
rear Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (2.4.G.1)
nearside front Front wheel bearing has slight play (2.5.A.3c)

He tested it as a non turbo diesel too and the smoke test was 2.4! I did not query this as the limit is 2.5 for a non turbo (3 for a TD), so that's good, the average smoke on the first test was 4.7 I think!

Happy days! Not too worried about the advisories, I know it's covered in surface rust underneath!

Thanks guys! And thanks for all your help.

I was bricking it! It did legally fail then pass, the passenger wing indicator didn't, the connector is corroded, a bit of WD40 and inserting the bulb a few times woke it up, and the battery terminals were loose, they were taken off and put back on again.

So happy now! Roll on next year (or the next thing to unexpectedly fail and need fixing!). Another Xantia lives another year

Ooooh, actually, one thing I need...

When the battery was out, the radio wants the code... I know the code, have entered it but cannot remember what button confirms it! It's the radio with the 'CD' aux in on the front, and the one without the most buttons (sat at work now, can't remember it's actual name but don't want to drive home in silence!) I thought it was AF but it's not!

I may have had the code wrong in my head...

So wheel bearings then? Any idea how much the kit is from citroen? Euro car parts only have Lucas, and I don't trust their wires, let alone their bearings!

Is it simple ish to strip the hub off and take to someone with a press? I have abs...

Abs won't help... You need glutes for that...

Basically, yes... Hub off and off to a press. Whilst the hub is out, swap the lower swivel joint too...

I can give detailed guidance if needed.... A 10 Ton press will do the job.

Lucas bearings should be OK... It's not the infamous Joe Lucas the Prince of Darkness any more... It's just a name...

That's good then. One of the previous owners on Autoshite said he had that bearing replaced a few years ago with a second hand one... luckily as it's all been apart before it should all undo, so I'm going to give it a go. I was given a number by someone for a chap locally who can press the old one out and the new one in, charges £40 an hour (not vat registered so win there) if I wanted him to do the whole lot, but I'll give it a crack I think.

It's not noisy yet, I've locked the radio out so had a silent drive home last night and in this morning and couldn't hear anything. Going to swap the radio fuse at lunchtime so the radio can go on without the keys and leave it all afternoon to sort itself out (found an old thread where that was mentioned for a blaunkpukt)

Odd that it should have play in it without noise... Normally the first signs of failure is a low whine at certain speeds...

Which reminds me, I have a wheel bearing starting to go home on the Activa...

Well if it is making a noise I can't hear it. My hearings not great anyway though, then all else I can hear is either wind noise, road noise, engine noise, drivetrain noise if I slow down and not change down a gear in time so the drivetrain labours etc

Congrats with the mot, not posted yet but have been reading. Bearings on a non-coiler are easier than anything else due to the lower wishbone being easier to manipulate (no spring compressors). As Jim says, do the bottom joint at the same time whilst it's off.
Keep the old beast going, Although not environmentally friendly in today's world, according the to 'everyone in the media'. How much does it cost to produce/replace your car every 3 years instead of recycling it from the tat yard?
Run old cars cheaply if you know your spanners, if not buy new ones and give them to the likes of us when they're 10 years old.

On a meandering note Jim, re done the pump cables on the 406 and done the 'capteur d'avance' o rings under the resin, still flying. bought 7 years ago for 450 on a 96 plate now with a mere 220k on the clock, got to be good for another couple of yrs
