Yep, who knows why it's been shoved half way down the piston!? :)

Just a matter of unscrewing the bottom ball joint next. Note use of high level left leg to help to stop the massive heavy steel workbench from turning over!

The gearbox underside is very oily but I don't think this seal is that fault. Drive shaft is very much lacking in oil coating which I thought it would do well to escape if this was the culprit

Gosh no Matt! I once ended up in A&E after a mishap with brake fluid...

It may well be, it takes only a tiny leak to make a right mess! I tend to find little leaks don't get as far as the CV joint and if it does it may well get flung off before it can make a mess.

If you have one in stock, I'd be tempted to swap the seal for a new one whilst it's all in bits... Diff seals are one thing I always keep in stock...

I have to agree with Jim there, whenever I expose a seal anywhere I always renew it as a matter of course, can save a lot of redoing jobs for the sake of a few quid!! :-D

I do not have this one in stock (or I don't think so!)

Otherwise I'm same view as you both, get it changed. Next time I'm in the area will look to change it.

I was pretty convinced it's the engine sump gasket (or rather rtv at this joint) that's failed, but surprised how much is all over the gearbox and little on and around the sump.

May even be coming from engine further up - do DV6 oil filter housings have seals that fail? Half remember reading something about them?

Hoping it's not the turbo's oil feed as it's DPF off to get at that if so!

Yes, I have a feeling it was Husky who had one leak...

Ah, ok I'll have a search on the forum.

Spot the brake fluid reservoir cap!

Quick Autodoc search, oil cooler seals set (6 different ones seemingly)

https://m.autodoc.co.uk/3rg/10254267

£3.40

Will double check numbers on the Parts thread in a bit :)

Some other seals
https://m.autodoc.co.uk/ajusa/8554885
£1.51
And
https://m.autodoc.co.uk/ajusa/8554882
£2.41

Not sure if the above two form part of the 6 part set in the first link
