Why couldn't the xantia engine start puffing white smoke back in June or July after all the thousands she's has spent on over the years. That's gratitude for yer

Likewise Nigel, many of us have been through this - it will probably be our son's turn next. :?

If you want something as a short term car I would seriously a 406 Hdi, they are very reliable and very cheap and there are a few good ones about at the moment, have a look on Ebay.

Nigel, above all I hope and trust your dad is OK/going to be OK and you're coping OK with your mum... I know precisely the situation you're in and my thoughts are with you.

Don't worry, the right car will come along but don't compromise whatever the prevailing situation... You will regret it.

Thanks people, I haven't had much chance to switch the computer on this past week
Mother is fine if a bit testing at times and Father is being monitored daily for fluid
in his chest cavity, they are giving him furosemide intravenously to push this fluid out of his body.

its like the biggest time waster going the computer.

ive been pondering a Rover 75 Tourer 20.litre Diesel Auto estate as the replacement car for the Xantia.
I know I know its not even French but I have considered reliability, parts availability, running costs
and the beautiful leather interiors they have. They are as some say tire hungry but then I found the Xantia tyre hungry to.
10K out of a set of front tyres was the norm.

I had a chat with Simon the Pleiades mechanic yesterday when we collected my sons Peugeot Van. (it actually passed its MOT).
and it seems that the 2.0l rover Auto with the BMW diesel is a fairly safe bet.
Ill shall be needing a crane in the boot soon so an estate car is a necessary evil.

I have been driving my Dads Dacia and although quite quick it is to light for my liking it doesn't give you
that all-round sense of security that a big heavy car does. The ride is very good considering it is a cheapy car
and you can take that from someone who has a body full of inoperable hernias (to dangerous to operate on them).
Most sprung cars will leave me in so much pain I simply cannot function until I have rested for about 3 weeks.
That's why I stuck with my xantia for so long.

I am not amused at the technology added to Citroens of late and with short trips I feel I shall be blocking my DPF fairly frequently
especially in an automatic. with turbo failure relevant on 1.6HDi's it doesn't leave much to be desired with the latest Citroen cars.
I shall still be following the 3 x 500 mile fluid cleaning process of an auto box in whatever car I end up with. then probably about every 5K
intervals.
regards.
Nigel.

People I know speak very highly of the Rover 75 Nigel and this could be just the car for you...

They are very opulent... You may find them a bit tight in the cockpit after a Xantia though... Some may call it cosseting but I found it small and claustrophobic but then I do suffer from claustrophobia so judge for yourself... It may be me as I find many cars likewise...

I've spannered on one in the past and they're not at all bad...

Good to hear parents are as well as can be expected...

Thanks Jim
The general opinion of the 75 seems about the same everywhere
Reliable. Fairly fuel efficient. Comfortable I'll pass on your well wishes to my Dad. Thanks. .Nigel.

I recall one forum member picked up a Rover 75 that was not running properly. It turned out the timing was off by one tooth. He got it corrected, and it was then a nice and reliable car.

My brother has a Freelander with the same diesel engine in and it's proving to be very reliable. I've never been in an estate or diesel 75 but I hired a petrol one 10 years ago and it was very nice indeed, if a little "old fashioned" for my 32 years of age then.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean! I must admit I like it a lot but then I'm of that age... It's like a posh gentlemen's club...

Nigel, knowing you, I think you'll find the interior décor very agreeable ;)

My youngest daughter had one*, the 2L BMW Diesel, connoisseur trim, it was very nice and we used to swap cars regularly - she often needed my C5 estate.

I found it an excellent car to drive, similar to the C5, some things better, some not but all in all no great difference.
It was a bit more frugal on the diesel than my C5. The cabin is a nice place to be, very much a 'gentleman's club' air to it.

Satnav was a completely useless article though.

*much to the amusement of her friends (old man's car)! Such things don't bother her, she loved the comfort and as she is an embalmer it fit in nicely with her job :)

I just like estates because I need a wheelchair occasionally and I have a lot of radio control sailing yachts to play with to and I don't want to get the seats dirty with mud from the lakes. I think I shall be investing either in parking sensors or some sort of parking camera as I have had a couple of recent shunts in my xantia estate which has misterioysly stopped puffing white smoke I'm beginning to wonder if the egr was blocked. And a recent run at 3-30 up the a14 at 90mph cleared it out. Any thoughts? The car was very sluggish when cold just before the smoke stopped. Now no longer sluggish at all. Still looking at getting a 75 though.I used to have a neighbour that worked with the deceased and she used to talk to me about it every evening. Because her other half wouldn't discuss it he found it sickening but I found it very interesting. Maybe it was her I was interested in.

Laura certainly has some tales to tell, most that can't be repeated. She did a couple of stints in Holland, disaster recovery work, and was warned that what she saw there and handled must never, ever be spoken of, even with her colleagues there.

Her boyfriend is a funeral director - for a different firm - he runs a black Rover 75 estate too.

It is sometimes very hard for people who have to face great adversity in life to keep all that inside without someone to talk to. It can
Become quite disturbing. She must have a cast iron constitution to be able to cope with it all.

Nigel, pleased to hear the Xantia is happy again... No great idea why it's suddenly sorted itself.. Unlikely to have been EGR as the smoke was white, signifying incomplete combustion...

Cold have been a sticky valve...

You know, replacing the old Xantia is going to be hard... I know by just how happy I am to be running one again and I just cannot imagine what can replace it...

Nothing else quite cuts the mustard...
