If the plastic ive removed from the rear axle isn't the cause of this annoying noise then the handbrake cable will be the next thing to inspect, im thinking it cant be the trailing arm as that would make a more solid knock and maybe it would bang on very hard breaking ?

My method for rust removal is:
- Twist knot wire brush on angle grinder + power file on the intricate bits.
- Phosphoric acid (can buy it on eBay) on all the bare metal. Give it a while to do it's thing.
- Wipe down with wet cloth to neutralise the acid, let it dry.
- Slap on with a brush some cheap black metal paint. I've been using "Blackfriars" available from my builders merchant.
- Optional: brush on some tetra seal underseal thick tarry stuff

I've got the wire wheels, and hammerite black so might do the wire it off , then the Phosphoric acid let that dry , then hammerite. I used to use a product called vactan it was a light green colour. You had to shake it up well then brush it on the metal (rust) turned black and went hard .

Yes, I've heard of Vactan, it seems to get positive mentions online. Never used it myself as yet

Smells alwful but it's good stuff, think it was made for boats hulls, ive seen land rover groups praising it to the roof tops, thats a couple of reasons I brought it , I was restoring an old escort van, the old stripe photo was the before how i drove it back from East London, work i did as follows,
Replaced clutch pedal and box, new hand brake cables, full service, new primer and fuel housing, it was drawing in air. Cambelt was done by previous owner, and a set of original wheels off Ebay for £50 , van cost 250, sold it for 1250. Clutch and box housing 25 , 20 for handbrake cables, service kit 28, this was 9 yr ago. I wet sanded the whole body, cut the paint, then polished the heck out of it and , I used it for several months , put it up for sale and it went withing a fornite. Yes I miss it , wished id of kept it but back then I was getting old cars 2 a month and flipping them .

Back on track this was taken just afer I replaced its thermostat housing due to the thermostat being stuck open , pity it can't just be that you replace , but I guess it makes sense to do it by the whole unit .

Nice shiny blue car ....tbh its pretty filthy due to the weather but this color makes it still look clean.
Hub nut size 36mm , just dropped that here so I know when its next needing removal.

Mine too! Just as filthy (ok a bit less brake pad dust) within a week!Huskyxantia wrote: 25 Jan 2026, 14:04 Nice shiny blue car ....tbh its pretty filthy due to the weather but this color makes it still look clean.
Ah, well it's probably 35mm, rather than 36mm - seems to be harder to find a 35mm socket than a 36mm! It'll normally undo ok with the oversized socket though.Hub nut size 36mm , just dropped that here so I know when its next needing removal.

Re: Peugeot 207 1.6hdi (New edition to the fleet)
So I had to pop out this evening, a few hours after removing the plastic covers over the rear beam, and the noise is still there , it never did this before the shock was replaced, could the new shock be the cause, could the wheel bearing be playing up ? I've new drums for the rear so once these are replaced of the noise is still there then its got to be the shock, I might put back the good one that came off it and try that. The rear shocks needed replacing as it did bang over humps (speed) now my heads thinking hold on , what if the trailing arm bush is failing ?? Oh god can of worms time

Oh dear, my work colleague broke one (I think one!?) of hers bending over the garden waste wheelie bin, seems it's easily done!
And just "be careful" is the treatment

Trailing arm bush: can you get a crow bar or similar lever in and see if you can easily flex the bush?

Re: Peugeot 207 1.6hdi (New edition to the fleet)
Think that will be something I will be doing to check for play , I only thought they made a noise when braking hard , I guess uneven surface can cause the arm the drop , normal suspension movements then the noise happens , thing is it sounds plastic not metallic
