Autodoc, searching not by car, but by
9656262780
(Above number from current motor, with the -03 chopped off)
Only gives 1.4 and 1.7kW options (all the 2.2, 2.5 motors don't seem to cross reference to this number)

Thought I had the answer easily on number of teeth on drive gear as searching on the above number, is one drive gear sold separately but in its specifics it says
number of gear teeth: 10,11,12,13
Which is some trick gear that can achieve that.

Also solenoid is a very reasonable £16.69.

But at present, given a motor potentially being only £38, I'll change the full item and rule out as much in one go as possible.

Suggests 5802M3 is correct part number. This again seems to point to 1.4 and 1.7 kW options so the Halfords £38 option seems promising.

Think will get it ordered and go for a return refund if nothing like what I need.

Actually had starting issues myself today. Was slow to crank at first, then downtown just died. Turning the key did nothing. Turns out it was the starter motor. We bump started it, took it to an electrician and I think he changed the solenoid and the brushes.

Yeah, hopefully this will solve it! I hope you fix it soon as well, keep us posted. :D The odd thing was, I didn't notice any issues at all before, it always started good. Just today was a bit slow to turn over and the next time, poof, nothing.

Also, I see you have the glow plug code too, so far I didn't notice issues but it hasn't been that cold yet. Coldest I started it at, was at 1c, after sitting for a few days.

Matt,

FYI, I found Cit Part No 5802CP this number maybe old. Mitsubishi M000 T 20871 starter motor CL5 (class 5) until RPO 11920.

Hopefully this helps narrow down your search.

Marc, Will be able to confirm correct and up to date part number from your VIN.

Kenny

I can only go by recent experience, our C5 X7 was starting on the button and never failed. Had to get Green Flag out mid December when it refused to do anything but a slight click.
Starter Motor was replaced and here is the good bit. The good lady who has it as her daily driver told me when she had picked it up from the garage " well it starts a lot quicker now than it had been " :(

Just to summarise earlier waffling:

Started in -3°C then again the next morning in indicated -5°C with current glow plug fault present= bit lumpy for 1-2 seconds at idle then "cleared it's throat" or, more accurately: began running consistently on all cylinders, and was fine after that.

Interesting the sudden starter motor failures being reported - all interesting stuff!

My starter failure experience thus far was my wife's 206 1.6 HDi = more accurately was a sticking starter. Sometimes no start, sometimes reluctant to let go of the ring gear once it fired up. Second hand starter bought (£12 online or something ridiculous cheap including delivery) that was stripped down, regressed, commutator cleaned, then starter fitted complete= never a problem since. Incidentally DV6 starter (on the rear of the block, above driveshaft) is absolute pig of a job.

In comparison, 2.2 HDi starter, sat on the front, I'm pretty much looking forward to the task! :-D

Both mine the 1.6 16v and RHR hdi's have started recently at -8, no issues, both with the glow plug fault. I stripped the Landy starter upteen times, then put a new solenoid on, good as new.

If anyone is having issues cold starting, I use a hot air gun (you know, the paint stripper type) blowing into the intake for a minute, turn the engine over and when it fires up, leave the gun blowing for another minute or two and the engine runs quiet and smooth, no cold diesel crack.
Has anyone seen the plot? :?

That's a great tip! It's a method that's been used on a few large industrial diesels for pre-heating where the use of glowplugs is impractical...

Those had/have what basically amounts to massive electric fan heaters in their inlet tracts...

I believe some diesel railways locomotives used this method to pre-heat...

Watching some first generation diesel locomotives start up on a very cold day from stone-cold can be very entertaining and not a bit smoky too :-D

Also, warm the battery on a cold morning before the first start too... Batteries loose quite a lot of capacity and ability to crank a cold engine as the temperature falls...

Also, depress the clutch (on a manual) during the first start attempt to avoid having to spin up a cold and stiff gearbox...

Always do that, can't help myself! Also park car in 1st gear as a handbrake backup.

It's surprising how excitable a friend gets when you moved their car and then find later they don't do either of the above! :rofl2:

Same here Matt :D My old dad taught me to do both every time when he was teaching me to drive and after nigh-on 50 years it's absolute force-of-habit!

Drives my youngest mad when she hops in her Pixo just after I've driven it and it makes me giggle when she bunny-hops it trying to start it in gear

Same, always done it. Comes from my dad also along with driving BX's with the handbrake on the front wheels.
