Yes I have to agree there Richard, the issue is making sure you get genuine parts. I source mine from my man in Midnight Motors, Watford who have been supplying me since I started driving. I believe them to be more aware of the forgery market than us private individuals and they source their parts from their own trusted sources. Like all things nobody really knows how deep the corruption may be but you can only take the best precautions you can and hope for the best. At least by getting them from a physical shop you have somewhere to take them back to and complain should it turn out to be necessary. So far I have not had a problem!! :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

To quote a certain motoring journalist who got into farming, "I did a thing!"

Fitted, with a little bit of light swearing and comments such as "im just going to take it to a mechanic"

It started normally when put back together. My final question on this topic is, how can I test it without the risk of it dying in traffic again? I dont mind if it just stops again, unavoidable, but i'd rather have some control of where I am when it happens!

Well done, I trust you didn't follow that man's methods and fit it with a hammer!! :-D I am a great fan of him by the way and I've been to both farm and pub as well as meeting him some years ago!!

As for testing your car the only thing to do is run the engine preferably under stress so I'd drive it around a circular route from home and put maybe 5 miles on it. You have to take a position and say, 'ok I trust it now' at some point. For me with a febi bilstein part I'd be happy with half a mile but only you know when you'll be happy. Good luck! :-D

One thing I would add is about the connector and crank seal. Was is oily? A leaking crank seal can cause problems with the connector and therefore the sensor. If it was dry I'd say you're good to go.

Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone

Grimy! But not oily!

*Final update, I hope!*

Drove it 4 miles today, shopping and back! No issues at all!

Thank you for all the help and advice!
