I hear what you are saying Jim, and thank you for taking the time to reply, but it puzzles me because on the DW8 you don't undo the big bolt on the crank to do the timing belt, just 4 bolts with a 10mm socket to remove the accessory pulley.

Ahh, never knew that! I must say that's a big improvement though, on the older XUD engines that bolt could be a bit of a showstopper... Well, that is bizarre because without a doubt you have no oil pressure and it seems to tie up with you swapping the cambelt...

Be worth dropping the sump and checking the oil pump and its drive...

Agree with you on all counts there.

We have done quite a few XUD engines where excessive studlock has previously been used....ended up welding 2 pieces of scaffolding together in an L-shape with a socket on the end. About 2 metres of leverage.......hell of a crack when it let's go....

Yes, will drop the sump to have a look and clean things up.....shame really as we were close to getting to finally drive it. Will check that the oil pump rotates

Pre rattle-gun I used to use the old starter motor trick to undo a particularly recalcitrant crank bolt... Used to work a treat and scare the wits out of any casual observer!

I'm watching with close interest as to what you find and I feel your frustration - so close and yet so far... One day soon, just keep the faith

Thank you for your support Jim. I even insured it starting yesterday.

My daily runaround lives a very hard life. I head out 6 mornings a week at 2:30 am doing deliveries, 200 in total, up kerbs, roundabouts, housing estates, multiple reversing manouveres, lots of low gear speed. I run at a fair auld pace.
I have even though about doing a dashcam sequence and posting it here, but if it fell into the wrong hands I would instantly lose my licence.

All this ramblings to say that a reliable car is essential, so I am ditching the Fiat 500 and moving to a 306 and I don't mind fitting a new oil pump in search of reliability.

Anyone got a good link for Docbackup which can run under Windows 10 ?

Cowboy mechanic strikes again.
He has rounded 5 of the Allen key bolts on the sump - 4 of the 5 tucked up high near the flywheel.

Tapped a splined slightly oversized bit into one of them and got it off. Didn't work on the other 4

Fingers crossed the other four can be teased out without too much difficulty ?

Bolts off, hammer and chisel, ugly and scary.

The oil pump is chain driven and turns when I put a ratchet on the crank nut. Gave it a few revolutions and nice slurping noise coming from the oil pump.

Any suggestions, before I just clean up the sump, re-asssemble, put oil in and fire it up?

Check the pressure relief valve is not stuck open before reassembly.

I'd be inclined to remove the oil pump, strip it and give it a full check...

Undo the Allen head bolt that holds the return pipe to the pump, undo 3 bolts with 10mm socket, slide out metal gasket, oil pump virtually falls out as play in the chain and the removal of the gasket gives plenty of room.

New oil pump now fitted, oil light is out but engine sounds really tappety.....

Play with advance/retard on timing maybe ???

Yep, I'd say so, give the pump has been subject to attention recently...

Hi Jim, didn't check the old pump coz I felt that it would serve me only the purpose of felling like I made a mistake and considering the abuse that my cars get.....I would rest easier having a new pump .

Will fiddle with the cogs....
