The ABS/ESP warning could be caused by a dodgy brake light switch - common problem in Pugs and I expect a C5 would use the same switch. These days of course the switch controls far more than just the Stop lights...

I thought I would remind myself of the MOT rule regarding DPF and visible smoke.
8.2.2.1. Exhaust emission control equipment
Defect
(d) Exhaust on a vehicle fitted with a diesel particulate filter emits visible smoke of any colour
