If it works then no problem ;) :) I confess it's more or less what I do...

The only thing different I do is leave the expansion tank cap off all the while I'm bleeding and only replace if after the engine is fully cooled again and the coolant topped up again if necessary.

I then repeat a couple of times over the next few days until all is once again settled...

Job completed and no need to drain the system, thank fully. I didn't take any pictures unfortunately, but the seal goes around the body of the thermostat and then sits within the housing. The seal I removed looked no different to the one I replaced it with, but I went ahead anyway. I cleaned up the housing and added a thin smear of petroleum jelly.

I also added a thin bead of 'instant gasket' to the mating surface of the housing and the thermostat body itself. If anything does get past the new seal, it shouldn't be able to get out and leak as it was doing. I will confirm when I get home from work later!
