These are some before/after pictures for the LED reversing light bulbs I bought, photos taken from the aliexpress reviews. I'd say these are a real representation of the sort of difference you will genuinely see...

Our driveway is completely dark, no street lighting at all, in the countryside. With the standard bulbs I couldn't see much with the mirrors and the camera showed a few vague outlines. Now they're not far off equivalent to the front headlights, can see the edges of the driveway in the mirrors and the camera just looks like daylight.

I don't think there's any dickhead factor in them either. You wouldn't normally reverse towards someone, or if you did then it would only be for a short time. They're just good. The DS5 has passed an MOT with them fitted, the Berlingo has passed a few at 3 different garages.

In my personal opinion, those are way too bright and almost like floodlights.

But let's be clear - passing an MOT does not make them road legal.

Of course I accept that people have choices and will do what they want regardless, so long as they accept any consequences.

They are almost like floodlights. Essential if you have a dark driveway.

But they're not on all the time, and are not as bright as headlights. If I drive forwards into my drive I'll still create more light pollution than if I reverse in.

My opinion is that rules are there to be observed, not blindly obeyed. They make reversing safer, and shouldn't bother anyone. Besides, they're probably equivalent to the reversing lights fitted to many new cars anyway.

The LED indicators are also brighter than standard bulbs. Not vastly, but definitely more visible. Also more eye-catching as they switch on/off sharply instead of the fading on/off you get with the filament in a traditional bulb heating and cooling. Again, I see this as entirely positive and probably only equivalent to new cars.

The number plate lights are also brighter. But nothing like dazzling.

I wouldn't muck about with headlights or tail lights. But for others brighter is probably better without actually bothering anyone.

Pah, attempts to do Crocodile Dundee impersonation: "that's not like a floodlight, this is what you call like a floodlight!

C4 single low level reversing light, pretty naff as standard. Absolutely great once modified.

Wasn't dazzling (due to mounting height) well, unless car was up on the MOT 4 post lift bringing it eye level = seemed pretty bright then!

Yes, not strictly legal as not "Type approved" but a lesser crime than than HID in a open reflector headlamp etc.
