Then again, ask yourself if what the vacuum pump runs is actually needed any more... I know on many Xantias the vacuum pump drives nothing more than the EGR valve and the cold fast idle actuator on the pump. Both those systems often ceased doing useful work long in the past so the vacuum pump was really quite surplus... Early Xantias with waxstat fast idle actuators didn't even have a vacuum pump! I'm not sure on the BX if it might do something more exotic like operate a vacuum sunroof or the like...
I was going to say "the vacuum pump is for the brake servo in a normal car" then remembered about the funky brakes (runs off the central hydraulics? = No servo booster required?) and then you mentioned vacuum operated sunroofs and I realised that I am likely well out my depth!

What's the hydraulic pump for the suspension driven from, thought that would be off this cam pulley?
The hydraulic pump is driven off the crank pulley Matt, along with the alternator and if fitted, the aircon compressor. In a hydraulic Citroen that pump does both suspension and power steering...

Sone sunroofs of the period, notably on the 205, used vacuum to deflate the rubber sunroof seal so the roof could open...

BX pulley on the camshaft drives the hydraulic pump, there is no other way to drive it...

I was starting to wonder and checked my BX Haynes but as it only covers the petrol models I could not be sure... Petrol models did drive the hydraulic pump from the crank pulley as the cam drive was needed for the distributor...

You saying it was a vacuum pump in an earlier post led to a bit of confusion...

In which case, the exchange of engines has now got a bit more complex... The pump pulley appears - from my Haynes XUD Diesel book - to be pressed onto an extension to the camshaft which the XUD9TE with a vacuum pump will not have. The XUD9TE cam for the vacuum pump drive does not have any extension much beyond the bearing cap and drives the pump via a spigot... If the engine was not fitted with a vacuum pump (early Xantias for example) a plate/cover was bolted to the end of the head in place of it...

Oh, think I have found a diagram:

XUD9TE in a BX also has pulley bolted on with Woodruff key:
