I was told that one number plate out was now an advisory, not a fail. We aren’t getting special treatment! (and I don’t deserve it anyway as I still haven’t changed it!)

Rp0thejester wrote: 11 Oct 2022, 19:54 At what point does a car with an extra brake light count as a fail? Surely it's extra, not needed, how would it affect the safety of the vehicle and others? Can't see that as a fail.

Just had a read of the MOT manual here https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspect ... tion-4-3-1 and it states that you must have half of a brake light source working.

Minor: with a multiple light source up to 1/2 not functioning
Major: missing, inoperative or in the case of a multiple light source more than 1/2 not functioning
Dangerous: all missing or inoperative

Also, “ Additional stop lamps, over and above the mandatory requirements, must be tested. However, if you are not sure if they are connected, you should give the benefit of the doubt.”

Personally, I think our brains are all kind of trained to look for the central stop light these days and I do worry that another car will have a higher chance of running in to the back of my sister’s C5 with her central light inoperative. This thread has got me thinking that I really must get around to fixing this.

Really I need a car swap for a month to live the C5 dream and fix a few things on it, I just never seem to have the time!

I think you are right James and worrying for we drivers of the older cars that were never fitted with them... My Saxo has one but not my AX... I may look into fitting one somehow...

Great post James, luckily my car doesn't have a top centre brake light. Surely right and left are good enough? I don't look at the top for indicators. And BMWs aren't fitted with indicators anyway.

Thanks everyone!

That's been really helpful.. not least that it's not going to cause a problem for the mot . I think I'll keep a watchful eye on eBay and live in hope!

Many thanks for all the replies. Ill try the repair option first before spending cash on ebay. At £206 for a new light it does make me wonder how many they sell! I remember trying to buy a suspension part for my old xantia from the local citroen dealer. The guy serving me looked at the price and said it was outrageous (£300 plus) and then said he would try to get me a discount. I ended up paying £150. Sadly that dealership has now closed.
