Sorry I actually ment: what is the ignition timing for the engine XY6B?

(not valve timing)

Does anyone know?

10 degrees at 800 rpm without vacuum. ( the small vacuum pipe to the distributor disconnected.)

Thank you Oldpug. I would never figured out that the vacuum pipe should be disconnected.

Does the camshaft lobes allways wear out when the rocker arms are worn?

Or is there a possibility that rocker arms are worn but not camshaft?

(camshaft is harder to find then rocker arms I guess, that is why I'm asking)

Its a bit 50/50, but you cant be sure until its all dismantled. If there is a lump worn into a the rocker I`m sure the corresponding lobe will also be worn. If you cant find the correct camshaft I think one from a XY8 or XW7 engine will work. Its just the XY6B is a higher performance engine with different cam profiles. I`ve never experimented with different camshafts. Have a word with my mate Dean Hunter at www.peugeotparts.co.uk I bet he has? and he may have a camshaft that will do the job.

I`ve been thinking about the ignition timing. Remember this old engine is PRE unleaded petrol, 10 degrees is back in the leaded fuel days. So I would recommend setting it at 5 degrees and using some petrol lead additive.

Thanks a lot for your advices and tips. I will be looking for a petrol lead additiv. I have not thought about it a lot before (this is my first 20+ car. I bought it two months ago).

It is good news that I may be able to use other engines' camshafts.
So say if I use a camshaft from XY8 in my XY6B engine, then the ignition timing must be adjusted according to the values for XY8, right?
(taking in account the non-leaded fuel, by minimizing the angle)

Your BX is not exactly a high performance car, and I doubt your going to race around like a rally driver. What ever camshaft you use your not going to notice much difference. Running it on unleaded fuel may produce pinking ( Detonation ) so just experiment with the ignition timing.

I definitely not going to race with this car :)

Thank you for your advices. It is tempting to experiment with the ignition timing. But I will have first to borrow a timing gun from a friend.
