Re: C5X7 best way to fit dashcam
Does anyone know whether the airbags on say a 2012 C5 extend to the A Pillar? From the instructions, it does not appear necessary to route cables under airbag. There is no indication on A Pillar itself that airbag is resident there.GiveMeABreak wrote: 01 Feb 2022, 10:21 See my illustrated post here when I fitted my front and rear cameras Graeme. I cover the fuses too. Mine was a saloon, but same principle.

Re: C5X7 best way to fit dashcam
For the C5, I didn't take the A Pillar off, as I was able to hide the wire along the windscreen side of the A Pillar, and then across the bottom of the A Pillar down to the fuse box.
However, when I fitted a dash cam to my new Aircross, I did partially remove the side of the A Pillar due to the design of the Aircross and secured the wires behind the airbags for safety, using the existing wiring channel in there. The structure on the Aircross is a different design and the tweeter speaker is fitted onto the A Pillar, so I needed to partially remove one side to route the wiring into the existing channel.

Back to the C5 X7, here is a picture of what is behind the A Pillar, so you can see where the side curtain airbag control wires extend to the A Pillar. I have marked in red dots where I tucked my wire behind the headlining and then at the corner, down the A Pillar edge. Note the wires were just tucked in along the edge with no excess - you don't want to tuck in excess cable, so measure and plan accordingly.

I followed Marc's directions and the wire traveling from the fuse box behind glove box up the windscreen pillar and through the roof console and it's totally invisible.Cit fan 151 wrote: 12 Apr 2022, 08:46Does anyone know whether the airbags on say a 2012 C5 extend to the A Pillar? Make sure you fix the camera to a part of the windscreen that gets wiped by the wipers. The RHS of the rain sensor has a slightly higher wiped area due to the design of the wipers but with the wide angle of the camera Ifound it impossible to avoid a littlebit of the rain sensor housing visible in the recorded image. I have not yet fitted the rear camera though.

Re: C5X7 best way to fit dashcam
Technically speaking objects should not intrude far (I cannot remember the limit) into the swept area of the windscreen. However, mounting it in such a way that it is hidden (from the view of the driver) not only covers this requirement, it also removes it from being a distraction to the driver (behind the rear view mirror works well, and normally provides it with a very good coverage position). On both my personal car and my company van I have them so positioned, and they both turn off their screens with 1 minute.

Re: C5X7 best way to fit dashcam
I think that's a bit ridiculous these days, considering that many vehicles including my own have a very large area of the centre of the windscreen already obscured by the console housing which contains the camera, sensors and other electronics. It was so large that I couldn't mount a dash cam on the left or the right of the console on the Aircross - it had to go underneath to ensure it could pickup left, right and dead ahead views. I don't know of many modern vehicles now that don't have a main windscreen console that is well within the wiping area to be honest.

You could fit shorter wiper blades?
This was suggested to me as way of getting an MOT pass so the wiped area wouldn't include the bad scratches left by some previous worn blades. I fitted one inch shorter blades and it passed.

I should be fine as there's nothing in my field of view, but mine's a magnetic eye ball camera, so I can just take it off.
