I am happy to report that I just finished redoing the boots and your guide was spot on.
But... the bearing was held on not by the screws, but by a half moon shaped metal plate held by the screws (torx bits)
After loosing the screws about two turns, I was able to pivot the metal plate to the side on the lower bolt, just like pivoting a caliper to change pads... and then the shaft came out with no force at all...
