Replying to my own post... My car was the 2nd case... simmilar to this one:

But... the bearing was held on not by the screws, but by a half moon shaped metal plate held by the screws (torx bits)

After loosing the screws about two turns, I was able to pivot the metal plate to the side on the lower bolt, just like pivoting a caliper to change pads... and then the shaft came out with no force at all...

To complete this post, this picture shows how the center bearing was supported on my car
