Hi Marc. Many thanks for the identification info. What a fount of knowledge you are! Sadly the gearbox I'd found, guaranteed and at less than £100 delivered was a 20CF02 whereas my code is 20CE28. I'll carry on with my search.

Just to bring this topic to a close, I did find a replacement gearbox in a 1.4 petrol Saxo but it had the code 20CE28 - the same as mine. It was being sold by a breaker for £125. I offered him a £100 which bought it. The only thorn was it needed a 200-mile round-trip to collect it. On ebay I also found a Valeo 3-piece clutch kit selling for £80 or best offer. £60 bought the kit. At that price, it made sense to change the clutch whether it needed it or not. Age dictates that my gearbox changing days are over, so I needed someone to do the change. I asked the guy who carries out my MOT's. He volunteered his assistant who did the job on their spare four-poster for another £200. So for around 400 quid, my little run-about is back on the top line.
