OH and - it WRONGLY states that this is an AUTO on the V5, but it's most definitely a 5 speed manual! (Weird !?)

It would be, yes. Without the reg number I could only lookup based just on the car model info in your post/profile and that gearbox is what came up - thought it was interesting that the two options seemed to match exactly your experience of what you thought it should take v what you drained out!
I guess it's possible having drained that much out, suggests it was overfilled by a previous mechanic who looked up somewhere and thought it was an ML6C without cooling fins :-)
