OH and - it WRONGLY states that this is an AUTO on the V5, but it's most definitely a 5 speed manual! (Weird !?)

There is I think a level plug on the rear of the transmission, if you want to check the level.

Overfilling is not a great idea.

Edit: Just noticed you mentioned ML6C.in your reply, on further research, this is the 6 speed box? Mine is a "5 speed" hence I think I have the ML5C box!

It would be, yes. Without the reg number I could only lookup based just on the car model info in your post/profile and that gearbox is what came up - thought it was interesting that the two options seemed to match exactly your experience of what you thought it should take v what you drained out!
I guess it's possible having drained that much out, suggests it was overfilled by a previous mechanic who looked up somewhere and thought it was an ML6C without cooling fins
