I don't think the failed gaiter is a reason for failure, but it appears to have puked all the oil out, which is deffo a fail.....!
There's loads on e-bay - search on part number 5206AZ.
You are right Marc, that the Cit procedure involves pulling the suspension down till the damper length is 315mm, then fitting the new one. This is perhaps to pre-load the damper connections at the right angle before tightening the bolts. If you were worried, you could put the new damper on, then get someone to sit in the boot to compress it a bit before doing the bolts up.

That’s not oil you see, I’ve been spraying WD40 over them to help when doing the job, they don’t seem to be leaking, I was going to remove wheel and jack up the leg to make it easier.
